Finding inspiration and keeping motivated

So, the decision has been made, the reliable 9-to-5 job is gone and I am determined to do something with my writing this year.  Now if only I could find some inspiration to get me going and some motivation to keep me going.

I’ve read that inspiration is what starts you off on a project and motivation is what keeps you going.  So inspiration comes mainly from outside sources (maybe looking at the amazing work of other people) while motivation comes from within (seeing the possibilities of my own work or project).

We all get our inspiration from difference sources.  Books, movies, songs, art and, of course, the artists themselves.  My inspiration comes from books and prolific writers – probably because I’m not the most productive writer and it’s something I really admire.

Isaac Asimov is one of my favourite writers for this reason.  While he isn’t my favourite author, he is my most admired writer. He once said that he writes for the same reason he breathes – because if he didn’t, he would die.  During an interview with Barbara Walters, Isaac Asimov was asked, “But what would you do if the doctor gave you only six months to live?”  He answered, “Write faster.”  I love that!

Other than a few select authors, I find inspiration more in the  books they write than the authors themselves. There are some books that I loved so much, that I still think about them now, months, even years, after I first read them.  Lionel Shriver’s “We Need to Talk About Kevin” was one of those books for me.  Brilliant! I dream of writing a book like this.  “The House of the Spirits” by Isabel Allende is another favourite, as is “The Lovely Bones” by Alice Sebold.  These are books I could read over and over again. And, even though I know nothing about the authors of these books, they have inspired me with their stories and the way they were told.

My point is, we don’t need to know a lot about what inspires us.  If it gets us moving and keeps us moving then we should drink in as much as we can.  Once we are inspired, the motivation will come.

And, with persistence, I may even manage to accomplish something I never thought I could do and become my own inspiration. Now, that would be really motivational.
